Mahtomedi Garden Club seeks applicants

 for 2008 Community Beautification Grants

The Mahtomedi Garden Club is now accepting applications for Community Beautification Grants with the goal of awarding either a single grant or a combination of smaller grants to help fund new public access garden projects.

“Mahtomedi Garden Club is dedicated to encouraging gardening and gardens in our area,” explained MGC President Shari Hamilton . “When our resources allow, we actively solicit grant applicants with the hope of encouraging new beautification efforts.”  In 2006, MGC awarded a total of $2,000 in grants, divided among four community garden projects. The club has also actively supported numerous conservation and beatification projects, using money raised through its annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale at Wedgewood Park . This year the club plans to award $750 in grants.

Groups interested in adopting neighborhood parks as well as youth, scouts, and non-profit groups are encouraged to apply, Hamilton said. The deadline is April 1.

Grant-eligible projects must be located in highly visible public access areas such as parks, schools or a business area. Applications will need to include:  a brief description of project goals and explanation of site selection; a project plan including a description of what the potential recipient’s contribution to the project will be; a planting plan using zone hardy perennials, trees or shrubs; a project budget with a description of how MGC funds will be used; and  a timeline for project completion. (Work funded by the garden club must be completed by October 31, 2008, unless advance arrangements are made as part of the application.)

To obtain application materials, please contact Hamilton at 651-748-3760. A garden club committee will review applications and award grants in time for spring planting. Applications may also be obtained from the club’s website: www.mahtomedigardenclub.org.
